About Sound Startups
The front door for entrepreneurship.
Our Mission
Sound Startups is a nonprofit ecosystem builder that helps aspiring founders move from idea to startup to growth. While many programs support companies that already exist, we focus on the earliest and most fragile stage of entrepreneurship: when individuals are exploring ideas and deciding whether to start companies.
Sound Startups is not an accelerator. We are the front door to entrepreneurship and a key partner in the growth of the regional startup ecosystem.
Sound Startups + SURF Incubator
Sound Startups programs operate within the SURF Incubator ecosystem, but the organizations are distinct and complementary.
Sound Startups
Nonprofit ecosystem builder. Founder education, startup pipeline development, community building, and mentorship networks.
SURF Incubator
Startup workspace and innovation hub. Coworking space, startup offices, event space, and a gathering point for the community.
Together, they form a complete startup environment. Sound Startups creates founders, SURF Incubator hosts startups, and new companies achieve scale by being growth-ready and plugged into the broader ecosystem.
The Ecosystem Flywheel
Community events attract aspiring founders. Founders enter programs and build startups. Successful founders return as mentors, attracting more aspiring founders. Each generation strengthens the next.
Leadership
James Barton
Founder & Executive Director
James founded Sound Startups to address the gap in early-stage founder support in the Puget Sound region. His vision is to create the front door for entrepreneurship: a place where anyone with the ambition to build a company can find community, mentorship, and guidance to begin their journey.

What We Stand For
Founder First
We support founders as people, not just their startups. That means mindset, skills, community, and resilience.
Community Driven
Startups grow faster in strong communities. We build peer groups, mentor networks, and founder collaboration.
Action Over Theory
Founders learn through experimentation and real-world feedback, not classroom lectures. Our programs emphasize doing.
Accessible Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship should not be limited to those with privileged networks. We create accessible entry points for new founders.
Give Back
Every successful founder is encouraged to mentor the next generation. This philosophy powers the Founder Guild.
